Lupe Fiasco - Dumb it Down!

Man...I am SO GLAD that this cat doesn't actually do what the title of this song says. Lupe has to be one of the MOST slept-on cats in hip-hop...even though he keeps the company of Jay and Kanye. So, SO dope. The funniest part is the white dude (who actually looks and dances EXACTLY like my dude, Scott, in Atlanta! LOL!) on the hook! LOL! Enjoy...I do!

Y'all gotta see this!!!

Okay y'all...not for nothing, and I KNOW this isn't a laughing matter, but yo...I KNOW the last days are here when Bun B expresses his feelings about an issue more civilly and cooly than Mos Def! Peep the vid, and wait for Bun B's interview. I aint mad at Mos for what he's saying either, but man...they way that he expressed it was kinda unexpected for me.

LB Bizness!!!

Man....last night(11/20/07) my favorite Hip Hop group of the moment (and prolly for a very long time), Little Brother, performed at the House of Blues in New Orleans. A couple of my comrades and I anxiously awaited the day that they'd return to the Crescent City b/c of how good "GETBACK" (in stores now!) is, and pretty much b/c I told them how they had all missed out on one of the BEST SHOWS EVAH the first time that Little Brother visited. I told one of my homies that their last show in N.O. was filled with a contagious, feverish energy that spread like a contagion through the crowd b/c the group performed all of their songs with a live band that played with a skillfullness that could only be described as "other-worldly", and was, in my humble opinion, one of the best live acts EVAH. He told me that he didn't doubt that they were good, but how could they compare with other acts he'd witnessed such as Jay-Z, Eminem, and Kanye'....to which I replied, "A Jay-Z show might cost you $150 per ticket. At that price it had BETTA be good! These cats are giving a show that is at least on par for a tenth of the price at $15." I couldn't wait for him to see for himself!
As Little Brother has a small but loyal following, they didn't use the main room to host the concert; they instead were in a smaller room. Still, it didn't ruin the night. We arrived at HOB...me practically foaming a the mouth in anticipation, right on time to catch their show. As we approached the venue, we saw Phonte grabbing something from the tour bus, and me, all glassy-eyed at the sight of one of my favorite emcees, embarrassingly oozed, "Hey y'all...that's my people right there! That's Phonte." to which he responded with a quick "wassup" nod, and proceeded onto the bus. We got into the venue, orded drinks, and posted up at the bar. We laughed at this cat that was at the show in his BALLIN-est, 3-piece, pin-striped suit...looking like a fake 50 cent, ackin' like he was ashamed to be with his miniature white Kim Kardashian lookalike. Heck brutha...if you're gonna take a white woman out amongst the people, she should at least look like Kim Kardashian! LOL! Anywho, about 20 min later, the DJ, who, by the by, was spinning some EXCELLENT shit, announced that Little Brother was about to come on. As the liquor overtook me like the urge to go commando overtakes Brittney Spears, I became what I like to call the "anti-cool". You know how some bruthas are really cool wherever they are...looking all stoic in an "I'm too cool to have fun" sort of way? Well...last night that guy I, most certainly, was not! When Little Brother came on stage, I was compelled to hollar like I was a white woman at Mardi Gras is compelled to raise her shirt for beads! And man...playing a mixture of the nearly FLAWLESS album, "GETBACK" (in stores now!) and the classic "The Minstrel Show" (also in stores now!), Little Brother did not dissapoint! Y'all...I was SOOO CRUNKTASTIC that Phonte yelled out, "Hey...mad shout-out to brothers at the bar! Big thangs poppin'! That's real love from real fans right there"! I hate to sound so starstruck, but those fellaz did their thing. They ended their magnificent show, and in a state that I could describe no less than giddy in my inebriation, I copped a GETBACK (in stores now!) shirt, and they hung around to give autographs to fans. As my comrades and I walked back to the car, we all giggled like school-girls at the show's apparent GREAT-NACITY, and I have maintained this high like I was cheifin' w/Snoop...blunt-to-blunt, back-to-back! I can't wait til the bruthas come back. If they come to your town, check em out; you will NOT be disappointed!

Esmee sings "No One" by Alicia Keys

Man.....you guys can say what you want, but this lil lady can SING!!! I emailed the link to this clip to a couple of my dark friends, and some actually responded with some passive hate. "She can sing....but she needs to watch what she does with her mouth." I could just hear the bitterness in that one. If that were the case, Rachelle Ferrell should just hang up her mic! Hell...in fact, Alicia Keys makes some pretty weird faces when she sings too! I KNOW she's mealnin-challenged, but really folks....let's give credit where it's due.

P.S. Yesterday, I saw a clip of a young Asian girl singing the SHIITE out of "And I Am Telling You". I'll post the clip when I find it!

Loving GETBACK by Little Brother

Man...I think that Little Brother's new cd, GETBACK is their best work to date! I ANXIOUSLY waited for it to come out, and man....I am NOT disappointed. I've heard a couple of cats complain that it's far too short, having only 11 tracks, but honestly, I wish that more people would do what they did. I'm TIRED of buying cds w/22 tracks....only 4 of them being worth listening to. In fact, I'd say that all 11 tracks are creatures of substance...existing beautifully independent of each other, yet harmoniously bound together in their quality (aint I a verbose bastich? LOL). Now, not wishing to dick-ride (no homo), but Phonte, once again, gives ample evidence that he TRULY is one of the most clever and talented cats in hip hop today. Not only does he deliver an articulate w/o being over-your-head type flow, but he also provides vocals throughout the cd. And Rapper Big Pooh seems to almost be on par with Phonte on this one. Despite not having 9th Wonder's production on the whole album, the beats are BANGIN'! The other producers are cats that produce for the Justus League, and it's good that these cats are getting some shine too...because they are NICE with it. Now, I've even heard a couple of underground-loving folks who didn't approve of their choice of Lil Wayne as one of the features on the track "Breaking My Heart" (me being one of them), but honestly his verse is cool, and it doesn't seem that far out of place. The album is loaded with witty songs that you absolutely can not sit still listening to like "Extrahard" and "Step It Up". I honestly think it's the best album of the year...which is a pretty bold statement considering this is the year Common and Kanye dropped some certified bangers. The sad part is that even though magazines such as the Source and XXL have given it it's due props (but still denied it the elusive "CLASSIC" label that Lil Kim received.....uugghh), Rolling Stone gave it 2 1/2 stars....saying that 9th Wonder left for greener pastures (not true; he did produce a song on the album), and that the beats sound like they were made by someone trying to clone his sound. I guess I should expect no less from a mainstream mag that hasn't been relevant to those who appreciate true artistry rather than mainstream trash since its inception. Nonetheless, Little Brother's album is a CLASSIC joint, start to finish, and is DEFINITELY worth picking up (and go buy it...authentic music like this needs real support, you mofos)!
